It looks like the UK government are finally actively starting to promote the idea of people and communities building homes, to the public, politicians and the construction industry. Community, custom and self build has been mostly ignored by many including (sadly) the RIBA and some local authorities, but clearly Starmer and co have cottoned on to its enormous potential. This is great to hear for those of us who have spent many years extolling the virtues of this way of procuring homes, but which only works well if local councils give it their active support.

This is particularly interesting to Julian as following his membership in the government’s right to build task force, he has a lot of experience with the issues facing custom build projects, but also a great appreciation for the potential of these projects to deliver bespoke cohesive homes. This government support will help developers and communities take on new projects such as the Chapeltown Cohousing Project in Leeds and the Graven Hill project in Bicester as featured on Grand Designs The Street.
