New Houses - New eco-house in a conservation area, Matlock, Derbyshire

This new dwelling was built on a steeply sloping site overlooking Matlock. The house is traditionally detailed and built entirely from locally sourced stonework with a natural slate roof. The ground floor is split-level and takes advantage of the sloping site to provide generous floor to ceiling heights towards the rear. At first floor level a sheltered terrace affords spectacular views across the valley to Riber Castle. Although this dwelling appears traditional, and has been designed within the strict criteria of the local conservation area, it is also highly energy efficient – combining exemplary levels of insulation with sustainable technologies such as a ground source heat pump (run from boreholes below the driveway) and photovoltaic panels to the entire south side of the garage roof.
