Stonebridge City Farm
Stonebridge City Farm is a green haven in an urban setting. The farm caters for users with a range of issues (including learning difficulties, physical disabilities, mental health issues and disadvantaged young people). The clients with staff/volunteer support do all the work on the farm. Using horticulture and animal husbandry disadvantaged people are able to develop their work, social and personal skills in a real working environment.
As well as running events for the local community the farm also performs an educational role for schools and young children, promoting healthy living and eating and environmental responsibilities.
Due to its expanding programme, the farm is looking to upgrade its existing barn, that houses it’s current livestock and build a new barn to house larger animals. Also required is an educational space for teaching and running classes.
By using the building itself to showcase alternative construction methods and continuing the practical educational techniques, the new barn development is to be used as a tool to educate visitors and users in sustainable building techniques and promote renewable energy sources.
The new barn will be named “Richard’s Barn” in memorial of Richard Goodfellow, who sadly passed away in August 2005.
Construction of the new barn is planned for 2009 which coincides with the farms 30th anniversary. Fundraising has already started, and any individuals or businesses that would like to offer financial assistance, donate materials or labour should see www.stonebridgecityfarm.com for further details.
